To arrive at this selection, the following procedure was followed

At the end of 2009, there were 110 AAF member competitions and organisations.
71 of these were scheduled to take place in 2010. A few competitions could not or preferred not to be considered for the AAF support (e.g. for organisational reasons).

Thus, 55 AAF member competitions were included in the first draw.
From these 55, six were randomly chosen by Mr. Rang.

Mr. Rang selected two more competitions from another group of international piano competitions, which were not AAF members. To be considered, a few additional conditions had to be fulfilled.

In total, 6 non-member international piano competitions taking place in 2010 were included in the draw.

Mr. Rang also selected six more AAF competitions, in case some of the first selected ones would be unable to organise the AAF reception.

These "runners-up" in order of their selection, were:

1. the "Rotary" International Piano Competition in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) [May 2010]
2. the "CCC" International Piano Competition, Toronto (Canada) [November 2010]
3. the "Grand Prix Animato", Paris (France) [December 2010]
4. the International "Johannes Brahms" Music Competition, Poertschach (Austria) [September 2010]
5. the International Piano Competition "Ennio Porrino", Cagliari (Italy) [October 2010]
6. the International Piano Competition "Dedication to Ferenc Liszt", Moscow (Russia) [Nov./Dec. 2010]

and two additional ones from among the remaining eligible non-member competitions:

1. the Concours International de Piano in Lagny sur Marne (France) [February 2010]
2. the Concours International "Jean Françaix" in Vanves (near Paris, France) [April 2010]

However, these runners-up were not consulted any more, since all eight competitions that had been initially selected, collaborated and organised the AAF receptions.
